The Sex Slaves of Pompeii

Near the modern City of Naples Italy lies the ancient city of Pompeii. Destroyed in 79 AD by an eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius. It was lost for 1,600 years, buried by tons of volcanic ash. In its heyday it was a popular tourist sexual resort. Much of its life and customs were also hidden by the “anti sex” historians. So even today we are learning more as secrets are being admitted to.

The sex workers of Pompeii were known through out the Mediterranean as some of the best in the world. If it could be done, you could find it here. What could not be done only cost you a bit more. Thankfully this meal is on the inexpensive side, so that it can be enjoyed even at the end of the budget or month whichever comes first.

Ingredients
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 can stewed tomatoes (un-drained)
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 oz. fresh mushrooms (rinsed & drained)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 (5 ounce) package elbow macaroni
  • 1 (10 1/2 ounce) can “Tomato Bisque” soup
  • 1 1⁄2 cups shredded asiago cheese
  • salt and pepper

Directions
Pre heat oven to 350 degrees.

  1. Brown ground beef in shortening until all red color disappears. (about 8 minutes) Drain all but 1½ tbs grease from the skillet.

  1. Add the onion and mushrooms. Sprinkle on the Worcester sauce. Cook for another 8 minutes to remove moisture from the onions & mushrooms. Stir occasionally.

  1. Now add the un-drained can of stewed tomatoes, lower the heat and let simmer for 30 minutes. As that simmers sprinkle 1 Tbs of fresh basil over the mixture.

  1. Meanwhile, cook the macaroni according to package directions. Combine macaroni and can of soup in a large bowl. Mix in about ½ cup of the shredded cheese. When the ground beef – tomato mixture is done gently stir that into the bowl lifting to allow it to mix well.

  1. Spray a 9 x 13 baking dish and spoon in the mixture. Spread the remaining cup of cheese across the top.  Sprinkle the remaining tbs of basil over this.

  2. Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes, or until top is bubbly and browned.

Serve with a side of a green vegetable if you wish. Also a nice bread will go nicely.
